Bacterial world has seen to consist three major classes i.e. Eubacteria, Spirochaetae and Myxobacteria. Myxobacterium is one of the remarkable bacteria that has special distinctive property of multicellular and macroscopic features that are called fruiting bodies. Unlike other motile prokaryotes, myxobacterium does not have visible organelles of locomotion however, some of them show gliding motility. This signifies the complex life cycles of myxobacterium that come along with the diverse physiological characteristics.
FRUITING MYXOBACTERIA
ECOLOGY
Lives in a habitat that allows them to utilize their capabilities of moving by gliding and colonizes dead decaying organism as their nutrient sources.
-
pH conditions
-
slightly acidic to slightly alkaline
-
pH5-pH8
-
example of habitat : soil
-
-
strictly aerobic mesophile
-
on the soil surface
-
more oxygen
-
Example of habitat :
-
animal dungs, soils, bark of living trees, decaying plant debris - rich in nutrient sources
-
some alkalophilic myxobacteria in alkaline lakes of East Africa
-
none in aquatic
They can be found almost everywhere and can survive in most of the extreme environment due to the formation of fruiting bodies
