Bacterial world has seen to consist three major classes i.e. Eubacteria, Spirochaetae and Myxobacteria. Myxobacterium is one of the remarkable bacteria that has special distinctive property of multicellular and macroscopic features that are called fruiting bodies. Unlike other motile prokaryotes, myxobacterium does not have visible organelles of locomotion however, some of them show gliding motility. This signifies the complex life cycles of myxobacterium that come along with the diverse physiological characteristics.
FRUITING MYXOBACTERIA
SOIL
Location
-
on the topmost layer of the soil
Source of nutrient
-
colonize decaying
plant material including rotting wood and bark from
dead and living trees
Example
-
Chondromyces
WATER BODIES
Location
-
on drippling bodies in sewage plants
Survival
-
washed in the plant from the soil and survive
-
produce fruiting bodies inside and on the surface of algal filament
Source of nutrient
-
made holes on the algal cell wall, enters the cells and lysed its content
Example
-
Polyangium parasitism
Marine
Scientists are still doing research to isolate the marine Myxobacteria. Most of them do not tolerate high salt content of seawater.
Locations
-
samples from Atlantic ocean - grow on the low-salt media but
not on seawater agar
-
samples from Pacific ocean - grow on seawater agar
Example
-
based on molecular taxonomy, the organisms collected from Pacific ocean comes from the Nannocystis complex
OTHER HABITATS
On various part of alkaline bogs
-
pH 6-8.7
-
example : Angiococcus
Dung of herbivorous mammals
-
nutrition rich
