Bacterial world has seen to consist three major classes i.e. Eubacteria, Spirochaetae and Myxobacteria. Myxobacterium is one of the remarkable bacteria that has special distinctive property of multicellular and macroscopic features that are called fruiting bodies. Unlike other motile prokaryotes, myxobacterium does not have visible organelles of locomotion however, some of them show gliding motility. This signifies the complex life cycles of myxobacterium that come along with the diverse physiological characteristics.
FRUITING MYXOBACTERIA
-
Myxobacteria pigmentation was caused by the excessive production of carotenoid pigments, usually carotenoid glycosides.
-
Fruiting myxobacteria likely to appear in vivid yellow, orange or red colors depending on the species.
-
Sorangium genus is cellulose decomposer living in the soil in different isolation produce different pigments such as pale yellow to pinks, oranges, deep reds, browns, grays and blacks.
Function
-
Give the fruiting body distinct colouration.
-
Provides photoprotection against lethal photodynamic effects of visible light.
-
Protect the structure against ultraviolet (UV) light penetration.
